Whānau Graduate From Affordable, Easy To Cook Kai Course

Empowering whānau with increased knowledge about preparing nutritious kai on a budget is what the Kai Ora programme at Te Whānau o Waipariera accomplishes with a new course starting soon.

Last week all 13 participants from two Kai Ora cohorts successfully graduated from the 10-week programme.

The kai cooked during the programme used pantry staples alongside seasonal ingredients with Kai Ora Facilitator, Sofie Koekoek, deliberately creating nutritional recipes that were easy to follow.

“Pumpkin soup, pasta sauce, quiche, beef stew, chickpea curry, butter chicken, sausage rolls, pulled pork tacos and cauliflower tacos. We start off the program with simple family favourite recipes and then move to incorporating vegetables into curries etc with the main focus making them affordable and nutritious that everyone can enjoy and easily recreate at home”.

The next Kai Ora intake is Wednesday 16th October - 11th December 12pm- 1pm at Te Manawa library, Westgate and Thursdays 17th October - 12th December 12-1pm at Kelston Community Hub.

Here's an example of what whānau prepare on the course.

For the past 30 years, Waipareira have provided free services and support for whānau of all ages in West Auckland – health, legal, housing and education.
