Our Kura Kaupapa Māori Schools Are A Great Model For Lowering Truancy

Our Management Lead for Frontline Services, Jole Thomson, spoke to TVNZ’s Breakfast this morning about the Government’s plan to address our high truancy rates with less than 50% of students attending school regularly.

“Attendance and truancy are part of a wider problem we are seeing across the community. Removing school lunches is only going to fuel that issue. We need to take a multi-facted approach. We need to do some real work on addressing the extreme poverty, the housing crisis, the bullying in schools and making schools a more welcoming place where they are free of judgement and they can excel. Look out at our Kura Kaupapa Māori with high attendance rates and huge success stories, what are they doing well?”.

Jole is highly experienced in dealing with truancy in our communities providing overarching support to the wider whānau with Te Whānau o Waipareira Frontline Services. If you need support please call us 0800-924-942.
