Hui Whakaoranga celebrates 40 years of Māori Health
In 1984 the Hui Whakaoranga was held to discuss issues in Māori health and 40 years later to the day, in the same location, Emeritus Professor Sir Mason Durie presented his views on what the future holds, at Hoani Waititi Marae.
Sir Mason gave the inaugural Whānau Ora Whakaoranga Lecture to over 100 Whānau Ora Partners from across Te Ika-a-Maui including kaimahi from Te Whānau o Waipareira.
CEO, John Tamihere acknowledged the significance of the 40 year milestone.
"40 years down the track we will be able to relive and look back on golden moments and opportunities. I just want to acknowledge all our Whānau Ora partners from up and down the motu. Today is a day to be proud to be Māori!"
The Whānau Ora Whakaoranga 2024 – 2064 Whānau Ora Rangahau project was also launched and will look at the next 40 years of Māori Health with Sir Mason Durie as the Pou.
Director of Wai Rangahau, Hector Kaiwai, said the team will define a future pathway for a by Māori, for Māori and with Māori health system.
"Hui Whakaoranga not only marks a milestone of progress but reaffirms our commitment to the principles it embodies, guiding us towards a future where those principles shape every facet of health and wellbeing for Māori and all New Zealanders.”
The day was followed by workshops for our kaimahi to enjoy that focused on Oranga Hinegaro, Aata - a tikanga Māori approach that nurtures and grows respectful relationships and Whakatau Tinana with Maria-Pare Te Whiu.
